Tradition is part of our history. We keep it real and honest for our visitors. It is real sweat you will see pouring off the wood-chopper's and shearer's and you will probably get splinters when leaning on and viewing the equestrian events!
Carterton, the closest shopping town enjoys hosting an influx of thousands of visitors over show time and we are thrilled by the support local businesses give the show. Our annual Show runs for 3 days and always starts on the Friday after Labour weekend. The 2017 Show dates are 27th, 28th and 29th October. This year will be our 140th Show.
Starting Friday 27th October with the Equestrian events, Trade site set up, Home Industry judging, wood-chopping & shearing preparations. Gates open at 5pm for the Night Show.
Saturday 28th October and Sunday 29th October are the family days with plenty of entertainment, livestock judging, shearing and wood-chopping competitions, dog trials, and so much more. The Wairarapa A&P Show has always been a safe and friendly place for families to spend time together enjoying the simple pleasures of country life in the 'real' NZ country. More emphasis is being placed on attracting children and families to the show, in 2014 we introduced the Discovery Trail where school children were given a map to bring to the Show. On presentation of this map they received a goody bag and were encouraged to visit the various sites on the map to get the required the stamps. Once completed they entered a draw to win some great prizes. The school with the most pupils attending the show also got rewarded.
Mahon's sideshow and amusements have been entertaining the young and old for generations at our Show with traditional rides including the dodgems, ghost train, laughing clowns and plenty more of the adrenaline seeking rides for those wanting a thrilling experience. If you need candy floss, popcorn or hotdogs they have them too!
